Villa Medici's 350-Year Residency Program Celebrated in Summer Exhibition
Since 1666, when Louis XIV founded the French Academy in Rome, Villa Medici has hosted artists and researchers for 12-month residencies. The 350-year tradition continues with 'Teatro delle Esposizioni #7,' a summer exhibition curated by NERO magazine/publishing house. Fourteen fellows—including filmmakers, philosophers, writers, visual artists, designers, and musicians—present works produced during their stay. The display uses a book format, with macro captions, annotated pages, photographic notes, and lecterns scattered through the villa's spaces. Highlights include a sound installation by Sébastien Roux translating Sol LeWitt's murals into music, a multimedia piece by Jackson exploring terror, a performance by Fabrice Denys (Fantazio) blending dada and street art, a nomadic sauna by designer Johan Brunel, and Anne-Violaine Houcke's video installation in the ancient cistern focusing on filmmaker Cecilia Mangini. The exhibition runs until September 18, 2016.
