Villa Massimo artists project works onto terrace for neighbors during lockdown
During the COVID-19 lockdown, residents of Villa Massimo, the German Academy in Rome, launched an analog initiative called 'Arte per i Vicini' (Art for the Neighbors). Conceived by current resident Esra Ersen, winner of the Rome Prize Villa Massimo 2019/20, the project involves nightly projections of videos, paintings, short films, and musical performances onto a large screen mounted on the terrace facing Viale XXI Aprile. The screenings occur every evening at 9 PM until April 17. Neighbors watching from their windows and balconies have been applauding. The first work was 'Collected Silence' by Tatjana Doll, a 6x3 meter canvas depicting the she-wolf with Romulus and Remus, displayed on the railing above the boundary walls until April 21 for Rome's birthday. Subsequent presentations included Birgit Brenner's film 'Hundred Seconds to Midnight', Stefan Keller's 'Composition for Tabla Solo and Live Electronics', Esra Ersen's silent film 'Diario', Torsten Rasch's videos, and Tatjana Doll again. On April 16, Famed will present 'Energetische Reinigung', and on April 17, Peter Wawerzinek will present 'Parole di ghiaia'. Extra content is shared on Facebook and Instagram. Villa Massimo, directed by Julia Draganović for about a year, awards scholarships to German artists, architects, composers, and writers under 40 to work and study in Rome.
