Villa Manin to Host Major Exhibition on the Concept of Borders, from Turner to Kiefer
Curated by Marco Goldin, the exhibition 'Confini. Da Turner a Monet a Hopper' at Villa Manin in Friuli Venezia Giulia will explore the concept of borders not as barriers but as opportunities for exchange and creative contamination. Scheduled from October 11, 2025, to April 12, 2026, the show will feature over 100 works by European and American artists from the 19th and 20th centuries, including Turner, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Munch, Mondrian, Rothko, Kiefer, and Hopper. The exhibition is structured in four sections, starting with Anselm Kiefer's 'Märkische Heide' (1974) and including Gustave Courbet's seascape, Ferdinand Hodler's mountain scene, Edward Hopper's 'High Noon' (as the show's logo), and Vincent van Gogh's 1887 self-portrait. Landscapes by Caspar David Friedrich, William Turner, and John Constable will be featured, alongside Piet Mondrian's 'Composition with Red, Yellow, Blue and Green' (1908). Works from the Hudson River School (Church, Durand, Kensett), Edvard Munch's 'Girls on the Bridge' (1901), and pieces by Gauguin, Monet, Hiroshige, and Hokusai will also be included. Goldin emphasizes that this is not a 'package exhibition' and drew inspiration from poetry by Walt Whitman, Fernando Pessoa, and T.S. Eliot, as well as Van Gogh's letters to his brother Theo.
