Villa Litta di Lainate: A 16th-Century Marvel of Water, Art, and Architecture
Villa Litta di Lainate, a 16th-century villa near Milan, exemplifies the Renaissance ideal of the 'villa of delights' with its elaborate gardens, water features, and artistic heritage. Commissioned by Pirro Visconti Borromeo in 1585, the villa was designed by architect Martino Bassi and involved artists from the Accademia dei Facchini della Val di Blenio, including Camillo Procaccini and Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli (Il Morazzone). The villa's nymphaeum and hidden water jets, described by Stendhal in 1817, continue to surprise visitors. The property later passed to the Litta family, with additions in the 18th and 19th centuries. Acquired by the municipality of Lainate in 1971, it underwent extensive restoration and is now open to the public. The villa's frescoes, including one by Procaccini with the inscription 'Omnia ad empyreo' (Everything descends from heaven), reflect the fusion of art, nature, and architecture.
