Villa Datris Foundation Celebrates 10 Years with Dual Exhibitions
The Villa Datris Foundation, dedicated to contemporary sculpture, marks its tenth anniversary with two concurrent exhibitions: 'Sculpture en fête !' at its main venue in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (through November 1, 2021) and 'Recyclage surcyclage' at Espace Monte-Cristo in Paris (through December 19, 2021). Founded in 2011 by Danièle Kapel-Marcovici (owner of Raja) and her late partner Tristan Fourtine, the foundation is housed in a grand manor between two branches of the Sorgue River. Directed by Stéphane Baumet, it has hosted annual thematic exhibitions such as 'Sculptrices' (2013), 'Archi-sculpture' (2015), 'Tissage tressage' (2018), and 'Bêtes de scène' (2019), attracting over 300,000 visitors with free admission. 'Sculpture en fête !' is a retrospective featuring over 150 works from the foundation's acquisitions, including pieces by Bernar Venet, Monika Sosnowska, Antonella Zazzera, Jean Denant, Niki de Saint Phalle, Tadashi Kawamata, Sarah Sze, Elias Crespin, and Kate MccGwire. The exhibition highlights the founder's taste for concrete and kinetic sculpture. In Paris, Espace Monte-Cristo—directed by Pauline Ruiz and Jules Fourtine—presents 'Recyclage surcyclage,' a remastered version of the 2020 Datris exhibition, with a carte blanche to Anita Molinero. Her melted red plastic bin monster is imprisoned in a courtyard. Other artists include Suzanne Husky, Zoë Paul, and Jeroen Frateur. This dual-venue approach allows visitors to experience the exhibitions in two stages.
