Villa d'Este concludes Nietzsche trilogy with show on artists who died young

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Villa d'Este in Tivoli presents 'Cari agli dèi: l’età giovane e la rivoluzione nelle arti', the final chapter of a trilogy dedicated to Friedrich Nietzsche, curated by Andrea Bruciati. The exhibition, framed as a cultural response to the Covid tragedy, explores premature death across the arts, honoring artists who died young but revolutionized their fields. Featured figures include Umberto Boccioni, Yves Klein, Piero Manzoni, Pino Pascali, Francesca Woodman, Andrea Pazienza, musicians Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse, actors, and writers John Keats, Anne Brontë, and Henri Alban Fournier. Over 50 works are displayed chronologically, emphasizing the creative urgency that drove these artists. Two video collages of films and concerts bookend the show. The historic venue, once home to the Este family, is positioned as a hub for contemporary collecting and ideas. The exhibition raises questions about Western culture's failure to fully embrace such genius, aiming to inspire young artists to overcome limits and challenge clichés. A rare portrait of Hadrian the Younger serves as a metaphor for regeneration.
