Villa Croce Museum in Genoa Faces Closure Amid Management Crisis

institutional · 2026-05-04

Since January 18, 2018, Villa Croce, the contemporary art museum in Genoa, has remained closed after the managing firm, Open, ceased operations due to insufficient visitor turnout and escalating expenses. This decision came shortly after Carlo Antonelli took on the role of curator on January 1, 2018. Both Antonelli and Anna Daneri were unable to carry out their planned exhibitions, including a retrospective of Claire Fontaine set for May 9. The museum's prospects are now unclear, stemming from disputes between Open, the city’s culture department, and the curatorial team backed by AmiXi, which withdrew its support following a homophobic statement made by Open's legal representative. Francesca Serrati was dismissed on March 1, and Antonelli's consultancy was terminated on May 7.
