Villa Croce 2016/2017 Season: Dialogues Between Historical and Emerging Italian Artists
Villa Croce in Genoa has announced its 2016/2017 exhibition season, opening September 23 with a major retrospective of Aldo Mondino, eleven years after his death, showcasing forty years of his painting, sculpture, and environmental works across five historic palaces and the Aquarium. The season continues with Alessandro Roma (October 28–January 8), followed by Cesare Leonardi's structures (January–April), duets between Alberto Trucco and Riccardo Baruzzi (May–June 2017), Patrick Angus and Tomaso De Lucai, and concluding with the Austrian collective Gelitin (July–September 2017). Director Ilaria Bonacossa highlighted the success of last year's "Chaotic Passion" exhibition, which celebrated the museum's 30th anniversary by pairing historical Italian artists with young talents, stimulating collectors and dialogue. The museum aims to improve services through "Open Your Art," a social startup that won a Fondazione Garrone bonus to manage the museum for four years. The season focuses on Italian art, with productions supported by private companies like Hofima, Casa di Cura Montallegro, and Rimorchiatori Riuniti, alongside Palazzo Ducale Fondazione per la Cultura. The "Davanti al Mare" residency project, curated by Francesco Garutti, features Diego Perrone. Bonacossa noted the difficulty in engaging Genoese audiences with Johanna Billing's video exhibition but praised the contemporary art forum's second edition, which attracted over 300 professionals from across Italy.
