Villa Celimontana: Imperial Building with Mosaics and Frescoes Unearthed on Rome's Caelian Hill

During consolidation works at Villa Celimontana on Rome's Caelian Hill, archaeologists from the Soprintendenza Speciale di Roma have uncovered a 2nd-century AD building decorated with mosaics, frescoes, and marble revetments. The discovery, funded by the PNRR, revealed eight rooms, five fully excavated, with the complex possibly serving as an aristocratic residence or the barracks of the V Cohort of the Vigiles. Notable finds include a geometric mosaic with a marine emblem featuring a dolphin, fish, lobster, and crab around a krater, and an older mosaic from the Antonine era with black vine scrolls on white. Fragments of painted ceilings and opus sectile were also found. The building underwent transformations in the 3rd century, and its foundations were later used for the 17th-century loggia of Villa Mattei. The site was abandoned by the 5th-6th century and buried over time. The interpretation is debated: the quality of decorations suggests a high-status domus, but parallels with the Vigiles barracks at Ostia, including the krater motif, support the military hypothesis. If confirmed, the barracks would be larger than previously thought, potentially covering much of the Caelian plateau. The excavation is ongoing, with further study needed to determine the building's function.
