Vik Muniz Skateboard Line Supports Rio Favelas

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Brazilian artist Vik Muniz has designed a line of eight skateboards titled "Eight color spectrum," created with digital printing and featuring collages of images from art history books. The boards are priced from $350 to $2,500 for the full set. They are on view until December 21 at Baronian Xippas gallery in Brussels, as part of a solo exhibition. The project is realized through The Skateroom, a platform that connects collectors, artists, galleries, museums, and retailers under an "Art for Social Impact" model. For each skateboard sold, 15% of proceeds support Escola Vidigal, an art and technology school founded by Muniz for low-income children in Rio de Janeiro. An additional 5% benefits Coletivo Skate Maré, a volunteer-run nonprofit that uses skateboarding for recreational activities aimed at youth at risk of criminality in the Maré favela. Muniz is known for using unconventional materials like tomato sauce, diamonds, chocolate syrup, and garbage to create realistic figures and portraits, which he then photographs from multiple angles.
