Vik Muniz's Mosaic Portraits 'Perfect Strangers' Transform NYC's 72nd Street Q Train Station

Vik Muniz's 2017 installation 'Perfect Strangers' at the 72nd Street station on Manhattan's Q line presents mosaic portraits of diverse New Yorkers. Created as part of the MTA Arts & Design program, the work features over three dozen figures photographed then recreated in glass mosaic. These images appear photographic from a distance but resolve into detailed mosaic construction upon closer inspection. Installed throughout the mezzanine and entrance areas with laminated glass at street level, the portraits depict sharply dressed commuters, children in costume, workers, wanderers, couples, and archetypal characters. Muniz stated his intention to portray 'normal people' who represent the city's polycultural reality. The MTA describes the work as capturing the 'unique and quirky kinds of people one encounters on the subway.' By balancing realism with material construction, the installation offers recognition without sentimentality in an environment typically characterized by anonymity. The tension between photographic immediacy and mosaic craftsmanship reflects Muniz's artistic practice while serving public transit users effectively.
