Vik Muniz Photographs Catador Leader Tiao at Jardim Gramacho Landfill

Vik Muniz, a Brazilian artist, photographed Tiao, a prominent figure among the catadores (waste pickers), at the Jardim Gramacho landfill close to Rio de Janeiro. This image was highlighted in a film reviewed by artcritical on January 8, 2011. Muniz collaborated with the catadores to create their portraits using materials sourced from the landfill. His initiative gained global recognition through the documentary Waste Land, which chronicled his process of crafting portraits from recycled items. Once the largest landfill in the world, it was a site where thousands of catadores sorted through recyclables.
