Vik Muniz Curates 'Rebus' Exhibition at MoMA Through Artist's Choice Series

Between December 11, 2008, and February 23, 2009, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City hosted an exhibition titled 'Rebus,' curated by Brazilian artist Vik Muniz. Situated at 11 West 53rd Street, the show showcased pieces from MoMA's permanent collection, creating surprising contrasts. Muniz juxtaposed Doris Ullman's 1929 photogravure of a chain gang with Robert Gober's prison window sculpture, as well as Marcel Duchamp's 1915 shovel alongside Ullman's photograph, delving into themes of labor and racism. Additional pairings included Erno Rubik's Cube with Alberto Giacometti's 1934 sculpture and Charles Stillwell's 1883 paper bag design. The exhibition also featured works by Zeke Berman, Eugene Atget, Roy Lichtenstein, and Martin Kippenberger, offering fresh insights into museum collections.
