Vietnam's Contemporary Art Scene Thrives Despite Infrastructure Gaps and Government Controls

Vietnam's contemporary art scene struggles with a lack of public venues, with dedicated museums and university programs only emerging recently. Nguyễn Trinh Thi, an artist at Hanoi's Manzi Art Space, highlights this visibility issue. A grassroots effort, supported by groups like the Goethe Institut and the Ford and Rockefeller foundations, organizes exhibitions. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism enforces strict regulations requiring permits for these showcases. Private organizations, including Ho Chi Minh City’s Nguyen Art Foundation and Hanoi’s VCCA and APD, play crucial roles as well. Though Nhà Sàn Studio, founded by Nguyễn Mạnh Đức and Trần Lương in 1998, closed in 2011, it led to the formation of the Nhà Sàn Collective. APD promotes artist exchanges and mentorships, while curator Ðô ̃ Tường Linh notes that artists explore a range of topics beyond propaganda. Despite these challenges, galleries like Galerie Quynh and CUC Gallery continue to thrive.
