Vier Nev's Animated Short 'A Mind Sang' Explores Optical Illusions and Perception

digital · 2026-04-27

Multimedia artist Vier Nev has released a new animated short film titled 'A Mind Sang,' which explores visual perception through optical illusions and gestalt principles. The film combines 2D and 3D animation to create ambiguous narratives where each frame contains two different images. Nev drew inspiration from twenty drawings he created on cultural representations of birth and identity, featuring recurring characters such as homosexual couples, mothers, and cats. The challenge was to make every frame contain dual imagery while maintaining an engaging experience. The film applies gestalt theories like figure-ground and closure to generate illusions and pareidolia, allowing multiple stories to unfold in parallel. The soundtrack, composed by Yanis El Masri, enhances the dreamlike atmosphere. 'A Mind Sang' won the Staff Pick Award at the 2020 Annecy Festival. Nev is currently exploring extended reality projects.
