Vienna Museums Reopen: Five Must-See Winter Exhibitions
After another lockdown, Vienna's museums have reopened with a rich calendar of exhibitions for the Christmas season and beyond. The Albertina marks the centenary of Amedeo Modigliani's death with a holistic show presenting his drawings, sculptures, and paintings together, contextualizing his work within the 'primitivist' revolution alongside Picasso, Derain, and Brancusi, and featuring African art, Cycladic sculptures, and Khmer art. The Bank Austria Kunstforum hosts the first Austrian retrospective of Rebecca Horn, spanning her performance documentation to current installations, exploring themes of love, eroticism, and machine-like objects with human attributes. The Leopold Museum reveals philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein as a photographer and collector, displaying his 1930s photo album, composite portraits, and correspondence, alongside works by contemporary artists like Vito Acconci and John Baldessari. The Mumok presents the first monographic exhibition of Wolfgang Tillmans covering photography, music, and video, from his 1990s pop culture images to abstract and pandemic-era works, including his debut album 'Moon in Earthlight'. The Belvedere 21 features Ugo Rondinone's first solo show in an Austrian museum, with new work groups creating a contemplative space of vertical landscapes, dancer figures, and timepieces linked to sunrise and sunset. All exhibitions run through early 2022.
