Vienna Design Week 2017: Passionswege and Stadtarbeit Highlights

festival-fair · 2026-05-05

The 2017 Vienna Design Week featured Passionswege, a format pairing Austrian and international designers with historic Viennese manufacturers. Festival director Lilli Hollein guided visitors through collaborations such as Dutch designer Jólan van der Wiel's transparent vases with crystal maker J. & L. Lobmeyr, Katharina Eisenköck's horn objects with artisan Thomas Petz of Petz Hornmanufaktur, and German designer Matthias Lehner's copper elements with forging company Hegenbart. Another key program, Stadtarbeit, focused on social design, selecting five projects from 58 submissions. Notable projects include Admirabel's performance exploring gambling and empty commercial spaces, Italian architecture collective ECOL's large-scale public space intervention engaging the local community, and Guerilla Architects' collaboration with migrants, Caritas, future.lab, and Architecture for Refugees on experimental refugee housing through the ReTracing Home workshop. The festival ran until October 8, 2017, at venues including Festivalzentrale Nord (Blaues Haus, Europaplatz 1) and Festivalzentrale Süd (Z-Sparkasse, Sparkassaplatz 4).
