Videobrasil Collection Showcases Southern Perspectives in Espírito Santo Exhibition
The REVIRAVOLTA exhibition presents the Videobrasil Collection in Vitória, Espírito Santo, through two complementary shows at the Museu de Arte do Espírito Santo (MAES) and Galeria Homero Massena until September 10. Curated by Solange Farkas, founder of Associação Cultural Videobrasil, the project originated from a 2019 invitation by the Espírito Santo government but was delayed by the pandemic. The exhibition features audiovisual works from the collection, focusing on geopolitical and performance themes from Southern Global artists. At MAES, "Reviravolta – Arte e geopolítica" includes works by artists like Paulo Nazareth and the Alto Amazonas Audiovisual collective, addressing colonial legacies and power dynamics. The Galeria Homero Massena hosts "Reviravolta – Corpo e performance," displaying 200 performance records spanning 40 years, with participants including Coco Fusco and Ayrson Heráclito. The exhibition marks the first significant presentation of the Videobrasil Collection in Espírito Santo's capital, aiming to expand access beyond traditional art centers like Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Nicolas Soares, MAES director, emphasizes the project's role in strengthening artistic networks. While future similar projects are uncertain due to Videobrasil's focus on the 2023 Bienal Sesc_Videobrasil in São Paulo, Farkas remains open to possibilities for the collection's travel.
