Video Tells Story of Pietro Consagra and Gibellina's Art Reconstruction
A video directed by Alfio Scuderi and Dario Palermo recounts the relationship between sculptor Pietro Consagra and the Sicilian town of Gibellina, which was rebuilt as an open-air art museum after a devastating earthquake on January 15, 1968, that killed 1,150 people and left over 90,000 homeless. The film is part of the centenary celebrations of Consagra's birth (Mazara del Vallo 1920 – Milan 2005), concluding in 2020. It features texts by Ludovico Corrao, the mayor who spearheaded the reconstruction, and Consagra himself, narrated by Filippo Luna with original live music by Gianni Gebbia. The project was commissioned by the Assessorato regionale dei Beni culturali e dell’Identità siciliana and the Fondazione Orestiadi. Consagra described Gibellina as a place where art expressed trust and helped people cope with trauma through sculpture and painting.
