Video from Louisiana Museum features artists recounting their early encounters with art
The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Copenhagen has produced a video compilation featuring interviews with prominent artists reflecting on their first artistic experiences. Lithuanian filmmaker Jonas Mekas (b. 1922) recalls his first image ending up under a Russian soldier's boot after receiving his first camera the week Soviet tanks entered his village. Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist (b. 1962) describes her video "I'm Not The Girl Who Misses Much" (1986) as an experiment to get a free festival ticket, but ironically calls it her "only good work." American painter George Condo (b. 1957) discusses his early oil painting attempts, while German artist Jonathan Meese (b. 1970) remembers receiving a box of pastels for his 22nd birthday. The video also includes clips of Cecily Brown (b. 1969), Gerhard Richter (b. 1932), Laurie Anderson (b. 1947), Paul Auster (b. 1947), Marina Abramović (b. 1946), William Kentridge (b. 1955), and Syrian poet Adonis (b. 1930).
