artist · 2026-04-20

Dara Birnbaum, a pivotal figure in the realm of video art, passed away in 2023. She was born in New York City in 1946 and rose to prominence during the 1970s by utilizing television as a form of artistic expression. Her notable piece, Technology/Transformation: Wonder Woman, created between 1978 and 1979, critiques the portrayal of gender. In Kiss The Girls: Make Them Cry from 1979, she delved into body language, while her 1980 work, Kojak/Wang, examined themes of masculinity and violence. Birnbaum encountered difficulties in acquiring footage, a stark contrast to the ease of access she experienced by 1985. She studied architecture at Carnegie Mellon, completed a B.F.A. at the San Francisco Art Institute, and obtained a certificate in Video and Electronic Editing. Major retrospectives of her work took place worldwide, including at Prada Aoyama in 2023 and Belvedere Palace in 2024.
