Vicente Todolí on HangarBicocca's reopening and citrus passion

institutional · 2026-04-27

Vicente Todolí, artistic director of Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan, discusses the museum's planned reopening in late May 2020 and his dual life as a citrus collector. The Centro Botín in Santander, designed by Renzo Piano, reopened on May 12 with reduced capacity, featuring its permanent collection, the Itinerarios series, and Anri Sala's site-specific work. Todolí, who also chairs the Botín Foundation's Advisory Committee, is in lockdown at his Palmera estate near Gandía, where he runs the Fundació Todolí Citrus, a botanical foundation studying rare citrus varieties. HangarBicocca will reopen May 22-24 with extended shows: Trisha Baga through January 2021, Cerith Wyn Evans through July, while Chen Zhen's solo exhibition moves to October and Neïl Belufa's to 2021. Todolí believes the pandemic won't drastically change contemporary art production, as artists already work in isolation, but may reduce blockbuster exhibitions. He plans an art project in his citrus grove involving artists Cristina Iglesias, Carsten Höller, and Antoni Miralda, inspired by 17th-century scholar Cassiano Dal Pozzo.
