Researchers from Tel Aviv University and the Weizmann Institute of Science have discovered that sildenafil, commonly recognized as Viagra, inhibits cancer metastasis through a newly identified biological process. This medication restricts cancer cells' ability to utilize cholesterol, which is crucial for the formation of cellular membranes. Cholesterol plays a vital role for cancer cells attempting to detach from the original tumor, spread throughout the body, and invade other organs. When cholesterol availability is restricted, these cells struggle to develop metastases. The team proposes that combining Viagra with statins, medications that reduce cholesterol production, could enhance its effectiveness in preventing cancer spread. Initially, sildenafil was developed to improve blood flow before its role in treating erectile dysfunction was recognized.
