Verdi's Un ballo in maschera staged at Teatro Comunale di Bologna

At the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Daniele Menghini leads a rendition of Verdi's Un ballo in maschera, with Riccardo Frizza overseeing the musical aspects. The narrative delves into themes of disguise and emotional suppression, centering on Count Riccardo, portrayed by tenor Matteo Lippi, a ruler known for his reckless behavior. Renato, played by Sebastian Catana, safeguards Riccardo from assassins Samuel and Tom, represented by Zhibin Zhang and Kwangsik Park. Amelia, depicted by Maria Teresa Leva, has an affair with Riccardo that ultimately leads to his demise. The production features sets by Signorini, costumes by Campisi, and lighting by Bertoli. Strong vocal performances, particularly from Leva and Lippi, enhance the opera, which faced censorship before its 1859 debut, inspired by the regicide of Gustav III.
