Verbo Performance Art Show Returns with 38 Actions Across São Paulo and São Luís

festival-fair · 2026-04-23

The 16th edition of Verbo: Mostra de Performance Arte resumes in-person events in 2022 after a two-year hiatus. Curated by Marcos Gallon and Samantha Moreira, the program runs from July 27 to 30 at Galeria Vermelho in São Paulo and on August 11 and 12 at Chão SLZ in São Luís do Maranhão. An extended series of actions will be integrated into Vermelho's regular exhibition program from September 2022 through May 2023. Founded in 2005 to build a network around performance art, the show received over 400 proposals this year. The curatorial selection identified recurring themes of racial issues, ancestry, gender, and identity, materialized through the pandemic's impact on physical presence and circulation. Thirty-eight actions feature artists and collectives from 12 Brazilian states and international performers from South Africa, Germany, Mexico, Russia, and Sweden. The program includes live performances and a shared video exhibition available online. The Maranhão schedule also features a talk by Valentina D’Avenia, artistic director of Lausanne's Festival of Sexualities and Genders, and a residency at Casa do Sereio in Alcântara, culminating in a presentation by artist André Vargas.
