Vera Molnar Homage Exhibition at Ludwig Museum Traverses 60 Years of Digital Art

exhibition · 2026-04-23

The Ludwig Museum in Budapest presents "À la recherche de Vera Molnar," a tribute to the pioneering digital artist who would have turned 100 this year. Organized by the Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur in collaboration with collector Josef Broich, the exhibition is curated by Richard Castelli and Zsófia Máté. It juxtaposes Molnar's work with pieces by contemporary artists who pay homage to her legacy, spanning six decades of digital and generative art practices. Among the featured works is aurèce vettier's "Tribute to Vera Molnar – Triptych" (2022), which uses AI trained on a herbarium dataset and then executed by a painter, echoing Molnar's own engagement with art history. The collective u2p050 presents "Asking a Shadow to Dance" (2024), an algorithmic sound and light sculpture inspired by Dürer's magic square. Frieder Nake, the oldest artist in the show, contributes "Hommage à Molnar" (2021), a generative piece whose evolution he cannot predict. Antoine Schmitt's "100 Squares Ensemble" (2023) features autonomous modules whose behavior he does not fully control. Casey Reas, co-creator of Processing and founder of NFT gallery Feral File, shows a black piece activated by white segments. Mario Klingemann's video installation "Trame temporelle" (2023) merges viewpoints and temporalities, while Tamiko Thiel and /p's augmented reality piece "Vera Plastica" (2023) uses a 3D plastic bottle model to address ecological repetition. The exhibition runs until April 14, 2024.
