Venturino Ventura: The Forgotten Architect of Fascist Italy

architecture-design · 2026-05-04

Luigi Prestinenza Puglisi examines the life of Venturino Ventura (1910–?), a Jewish architect from Italy whose professional journey was obstructed by Mussolini's racial policies. Born in Florence, Ventura graduated from the Regia Scuola di Architettura in Rome in 1936 and collaborated with prominent architects. In 1938, he secured the commission for the Torre della Mostra d'Oltremare in Naples, likely benefiting from the influence of a party secretary. The tower was finished during wartime. To escape persecution, Ventura self-exiled to Chieti from 1941 to 1942. After the conflict, he returned to Rome, concentrating on residential and office projects. His work received little exposure, apart from two buildings featured in L'architettura. He authored a now-lost manuscript, La città condannata, prompting Puglisi to advocate for renewed interest in Ventura and similarly overlooked architects.
