Venice Light Installation Signals Rising Sea Levels
On May 19, 2020, a light installation was activated on the facade of the Church of San Lorenzo in Venice, consisting of two pulsating LED strips suspended at 3.5 meters height, indicating projected future water levels from scientific studies. The work is part of "Territorial Agency: Oceans in Transformation," commissioned by TBA21–Academy and curated by Daniela Zyman. The project includes an online program from May 20–23, 2020, on ocean-archive.org, exploring seven trajectories (North Sea, Red Sea, Mid-Atlantic, Gulf Stream, Equatorial Pacific, Metropolitan Asia, Indian Ocean Gyre, Humboldt Current) that map environmental and economic interconnections in oceans. Accompanying the program is "Freq_wave," a sound project commissioned by TBA21–Academy and curated by Carl Michael von Hausswolff, inviting 84 sound artists to create tracks using ocean sound recordings, released every 10 days. The full program streams on ocean-archive.org and TBA21–Academy and Ocean Space Facebook pages. The physical opening of Ocean Space in Venice is scheduled for August 27, 2020.
