Venice launches digital collective memory project for 2019 acqua alta

digital · 2026-04-27

On November 12, 2019, Venice experienced a record high tide of 187 cm, causing widespread damage to homes, public spaces, and cultural heritage. In response, Ca' Foscari University and Science Gallery Venice launched Acquagranda 2019, a digital collective memory project that collects private messages, photos, videos, and social media posts from that night. The project is part of the European research initiative Odycceus, which analyzes social conflicts through online debates. Using data analysis and AI tools, the project gathers social media data to understand how information spreads and opinions form during catastrophic events. The public can contribute digital materials via email. In 2021, the project will expand into physical spaces in Venice, with QR codes, workshops, and a diffused exhibition opening April 21, featuring virtual artworks by international artists at venues including Ismar-Cnr, Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Fondazione Ugo e Olga Levi, Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, and Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello.
