Venice Film Festival to Premiere Final Chapter of Angela Ricci Lucchi's Diaries

The third and final chapter of "I diari di Angela – Noi due cineasti" will premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on September 2, 2025, at Sala Giardino. The film concludes a trilogy begun in 2018 after the death of Angela Ricci Lucchi, with her partner Yervant Gianikian continuing their shared work. The project draws from illustrated diaries, travel notes, and personal videos, blending intimate memories with political reflection. Writer Lucrezia Lerro voices Angela's illness diaries, adding poetic depth. Gianikian describes the six-year gap as shaped by global wars and his work on "Frente a Guernica. Director's Cut." The film explores memory, historical violence, and shared daily life, using their signature "camera analitica" to slow and examine archival footage. Gianikian and Ricci Lucchi, active since the 1970s, are known for experimental films that restore and reinterpret found footage, creating a "cinema within cinema." Their works include "Dal Polo all'Equatore," "Uomini anni vita," "Prigionieri della guerra," and "Inventario balcanico." Gianikian emphasizes their ethical choice of slowness to enable meditation on images. Lerro calls the experience a revelation, comparing it to learning a new language. The trilogy closes but leaves room for new perspectives.
