Venice Film Festival's Giornate degli Autori 2024 Lineup Revealed

The 21st edition of the Giornate degli Autori, an independent section of the 81st Venice International Film Festival (August 28–September 7, 2024), has announced its program. The event's theme is 'Between dream and reality,' with a poster by illustrator and architect Francesca Gastone depicting a girl balancing on a tightrope above a metropolis. The competition includes 10 films: 'Taxi Monamour' by Ciro De Caro (the sole Italian entry), 'Alpha.' by Jan-Willem Van Ewijk, 'Boomerang' by Shahab Fotouhi, 'Selon Joy' by Camille Lugan, 'To Kill a Mongolian Horse' by Jiang Xiaoxuan, 'Manas' by Marianna Brennand, 'Sugar Island' by Johanné Gómez Terrero, 'The Antique' by Rusudan Glurjidze, 'Super Happy Forever' by Kohei Igarashi, and 'Sanatorium Under The Sign Of The Hour Glass' by the Brothers Quay. The opening film is 'Coppia aperta quasi spalancata,' a documentary by Federica Di Giacomo starring Chiara Francini, inspired by Franca Rame and Dario Fo's play. Other documentaries include 'Alma del desierto' by Monica Taboada Tapia, 'Peaches Goes Bananas' by Marie Losier, 'Possibility of Paradise' by Mladen Kovačević, and 'Soudan, souviens-toi' by Hind Meddeb. The short 'Kora' by Cláudia Varejão will also screen. The closing film is 'Basileia' by Isabella Torre, with music by Andrea De Sica and editing by Jonas Carpignano. Artistic director Gaia Furrer emphasized themes of resilience and precariousness. The section is promoted by ANAC and 100autori.
