Venice exhibition Canicula explores hyper-stimulation through site-specific films
From 6 May to 22 November, the Fondazione In Between Art Film will unveil Canicula, the concluding chapter of its Trilogy of Uncertainties, at the Complesso dell’Ospedaletto in Venice. Curated by Leonardo Bigazzi, this exhibition showcases eight newly commissioned site-specific films by international artists, exploring themes such as distortion, pressure, and excess. Previous installments included Penumbra (2022), which debuted shortly after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and Nebula (2024), which emerged following the attacks on 7 October and the Gaza conflict. Artistic director Alessandro Rabottini describes Canicula as 'radically different' due to its emphasis on hyper-stimulation. Notable works include Roman Khimei and Yarema Malashchuk's Affirmations (2026) and Lawrence Abu Hamdan’s 450XL: The Story of a Fugitive Sound (2026). Founded in 2019 by costume designer Beatrice Bulgari in Rome, the foundation aims to create works that explore uncertainty without offering straightforward solutions.
