Venice council members rebel against Brugnaro's plan to close Bevilacqua La Masa

A council commission at Ca' Farsetti in Venice on July 26, 2016, drew an unusually large audience due to Mayor Luigi Brugnaro's proposal to close the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa and absorb its activities into the municipal administration, effective September 1. The closure is part of a broader plan to eliminate four entities, including the Centro Previsioni Maree, Ente Gondola, and Parco della Laguna. Budget assessor Michele Zuin reiterated the mayor's position that the incorporation would not disrupt cultural activities. However, several council members from Brugnaro's own majority, led by group leader Maurizio Crovato, voiced opposition. Crovato argued that the decision involves moral duties toward Felicita Bevilacqua La Masa, who donated Ca' Pesaro to Venice. Other councilors noted the lack of guidelines on the fate of the foundation's activities and properties, making it impossible to deliberate properly. They threatened to present numerous amendments or even block the measure during the city council session on July 29, signaling unprecedented internal obstruction. The public displayed 'Save BLM' signs. The mayor's response is expected soon.
