Venice Biennale's Market Ties Exposed as Galleries, Auction Houses, and Fashion Brands Converge
The 61st Venice Biennale opens, revealing an increasingly overt entanglement with the art market. Galleries now commonly fund artist projects in Venice and other biennials, covering soaring production and shipping costs. Auction houses Christie's and Sotheby's are active: Christie's hosts a private selling exhibition, 'Ghost Pavilion: A Venice Revealed,' at Ca' Dario Palazzo, featuring works by Mark Bradford, Andy Warhol, Louise Bourgeois, Édouard Manet, and Titian, with prices from $500,000 to $35 million. The palazzo, listed at around $24 million, has a macabre history linked to seven deaths. Sotheby's, after funding the U.S. Pavilion in 2024, is not supporting this year's pavilion but offers exclusive client excursions, including tours of Laurent Asscher's AMA Foundation and Marcantonio Brandolini Studio, and private views of Marina Abramovic at Gallerie dell'Accademia (supported by Lisson) and Jenny Saville at Ca' Pesaro (supported by Gagosian). The U.S. Pavilion, featuring sculptor Alma Allen, faces backlash; its organizer, the American Arts Conservancy, has resorted to crowdfunding. Fashion houses Bottega Veneta and Chanel are hosting events, and Frieze is bankrolling the British Pavilion for a second time, supporting Turner Prize-winning painter Lubaina Himid. The Biennale's polite fiction of being above the market is wearing thin.
