Venice Biennale Honors Late Curators with Posthumous Golden Lions; Nissan and PIPA Awards Announced

award · 2026-04-20

The Venice Biennale has posthumously honored four prominent figures with Golden Lions: curators Okwui Enwezor (1963-2019) and Germano Celant (1940-2020), historian Maurizio Calvesi (1927-2020), and architect Vittorio Gregotti (1927-2020). Their impactful work was showcased at the Biennale from 1974 to 2015. Both Celant and Gregotti sadly died from COVID-19 earlier this year. Biennale president Roberto Cicutto commended their groundbreaking insights. The Golden Lion is a prestigious lifetime achievement award. In other news, Ishu Han, a Tokyo-based artist from Shanghai, won the Grand Prix of the Nissan Art Award 2020 for his piece 'where are you now' (2020), which captures modern feelings of isolation. Finalists included Sachiko Kazama, Soichiro Mihara, Nobuko Tsuchiya, and Ei Wada. Isael Maxakali also won the PIPA Online award, celebrating indigenous artists and those often overlooked. Finalists for PIPA 2020 were Gê Viana, Maxwell Alexandre, Randolpho Lamonier, and Renata Felinto.
