Venice Biennale 57th Edition Honors Anne Imhof, Franz Erhard Walther, and Others

The 57th Venice Biennale awards ceremony took place on Saturday, 13 May, at Ca’ Giustinian in Venice. Anne Imhof, representing Germany, received the Golden Lion for Best National Participation for her installation Faust, a dystopian work featuring a raised glass floor, performers, and Doberman guards. Franz Erhard Walther won the award for best artist in the curated exhibition Vive Arte Viva! by Christine Macel. Hassan Khan, a UK-born artist based in Cairo, was awarded the Silver Lion for a Promising Young Artist. Brazil’s Cinthia Marcelle earned a special mention from the jury. Additional special mentions went to Charles Atlas and Petrit Halilaj. The jury included Manuel J. Borja-Villel, director of Spain’s Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid, critic Francesca Alfano Miglietti from Italy, curator Amy Cheng from Taiwan, writer Ntone Edjabe from Cameroon, and Tate curator Mark Godfrey from Great Britain.
