Venice Architecture Biennale 2021 to Open in May with COVID-19 Safety Measures

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Opening on May 22, 2021, the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, themed 'How will we live together?' and curated by Hashim Sarkis, follows a pandemic-related delay. This edition will showcase 63 countries, with Grenada, Iraq, Uzbekistan, and the Republic of Azerbaijan making their first appearances. Notably, this exhibition achieves gender parity among participants. Organized into five thematic areas—Among Diverse Beings, As New Households, As Emerging Communities, Across Borders, and As One Planet—Sarkis highlights the influence of contemporary global issues and the activism of young architects. COVID-19 safety measures will be strictly implemented. The exhibition runs until November 21, 2021, featuring projects at Forte Marghera and installations by Michal Rovner and Giuseppe Penone. A posthumous Golden Lion will honor architect Lina Bo Bardi. This marks the inaugural event under Roberto Cicutto’s presidency, following Paolo Baratta.
