Venezia81: 5 Italian Films in Competition, Guadagnino and Delpero Among Directors
The 81st Venice International Film Festival (August 28 – September 7, 2024) will feature 5 Italian films in the main competition, including works by Luca Guadagnino, Gianni Amelio, Maura Delpero, Giulia Steigerwalt, and the duo Fabio Grassadonia & Antonio Piazza. Guadagnino presents 'Queer', based on William S. Burroughs' novel, starring Daniel Craig and shot entirely at Cinecittà. Amelio's 'Campo di battaglia' is set during the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic. Delpero's 'Vermiglio' is set in the Dolomites at the end of WWII. Steigerwalt's 'Diva Futura' follows pornographer Riccardo Schicchi. 'Iddu' by Piazza & Grassadonia is a farcical take on mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro. Tim Burton's 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice' opens the festival out of competition, while Pupi Avati's 'L'orto americano' closes it. Four TV series will be presented in full, including 'M – Il figlio del secolo' starring Luca Marinelli.
