Venezia 80 Awards: Golden Lion to Yorgos Lanthimos' Poor Things

The 80th Venice International Film Festival concluded with Yorgos Lanthimos' 'Poor Things' winning the Golden Lion. Matteo Garrone's 'Io capitano' took the Silver Lion for Best Director, while Agnieszka Holland's 'Green Border' received the Special Jury Prize. The festival featured six Italian films in competition. Other major awards included the Volpi Cups for Best Actress to Cailee Spaeny for 'Priscilla' and Best Actor to Peter Sarsgaard for 'Memory'. The Best Screenplay award went to Guillermo Calderón and Pablo Larraín for 'El Conde'. Ryusuke Hamaguchi's 'Evil Does Not Exist' won the Grand Jury Prize. Seydou Sarr received the Marcello Mastroianni Award for emerging young actor for his role in 'Io capitano'. The Orizzonti section awarded Best Film to 'Explanation for Everything' by Gábor Reisz. Director Alberto Barbera praised the edition's quality despite the absence of Hollywood stars on the red carpet.
