Venezia 75: Damien Chazelle's 'First Man' to Open, Bradley Cooper's Directorial Debut Announced

The 75th Venice International Film Festival will open with Damien Chazelle's 'First Man' (Italian title: 'Il primo uomo'), starring Ryan Gosling, Jason Clarke, and Claire Foy, produced by Universal Pictures. Artistic director Alberto Barbera called it a privilege to present the film in world premiere. Another major announcement is Bradley Cooper's directorial debut 'A Star is Born', co-starring Lady Gaga. The competition lineup includes 21 films: 'Doubles Vies' by Olivier Assayas, 'The Sisters Brothers' by Jacques Audiard, 'The Ballad of Buster Scruggs' by the Coen brothers, 'Roma' by Alfonso Cuarón (acquired by Netflix), 'Suspiria' by Luca Guadagnino (with Tilda Swinton in three roles), 'The Favourite' by Yorgos Lanthimos, 'Capri Revolution' by Mario Martone, and 'At Eternity's Gate' by Julian Schnabel about Vincent van Gogh. Out of competition features include 'L'amica geniale' by Saverio Costanzo, 'Carmine Street Guitar' by Ron Mann, and 'Les Estivants' by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi. The former 'Cinema nel giardino' section is renamed 'Sconfini', featuring 'Il banchiere anarchico' by Giulio Base, 'The Tree of Life' extended cut by Terrence Malick, 'Magic Lantern' by Amir Naderi, and 'Camorra' by Francesco Patierno. The Orizzonti section opens with 'Sulla mia pelle' by Alessio Cremonini about the Stefano Cucchi case, starring Alessandro Borghi. Biennale president Paolo Baratta announced that the renovation of the Lido and Palazzo del Casinò will begin after this edition.
