Venezia 2026: Moretti, Guadagnino, Oasis doc among highlights

The 2026 Venice Film Festival (Mostra del Cinema di Venezia) presents a diverse lineup blending masters and emerging talents. Italian highlights include Nanni Moretti's 'Succederà questa notte', adapted from Eshkol Nevo's 'Legami', marking his return 37 years after 'Palombella rossa'. Andrea Pallaoro's 'The Echo Chamber', based on a Bernardo Bertolucci subject, co-written with Ludovica Rampoldi and Ilaria Bernardini, also competes. Paolo Strippoli's horror 'L'estranea' explores contemporary reality. Documentaries include 'Carla Lonzi, dentro e fuori dal mondo' on the feminist critic, 'La città dei vivi' adapting Nicola Lagioia's book on the Luca Varani murder case, and Alina Marazzi's 'La ragazza con la Leica' on war photographer Gerda Taro. International entries: Werner Herzog's 'Bucking Fastard' starring Rooney and Kate Mara, Wim Wenders' 'From Inside Out – The Architecture of Peter Zumthor' on Pritzker Prize winner Peter Zumthor, and May el-Toukhy's 'Woman Unknown', the only female-directed competition film. Major documentaries include 'Oasis: Don't Look Back in Anger' on the Gallagher brothers' band, and Luca Guadagnino's seven-hour 'Joie de vivre' on Bernardo Bertolucci. The jury is presided by Maggie Gyllenhaal. The festival closes summer and opens the international cinema season on the Lido.
