Velò Project Launches in Milan with Yu Chengchen and Rui Wu

exhibition · 2026-04-26

A new independent and itinerant project called Velò Project has launched in Milan, inaugurated with the exhibition 'Bamboo Dragonfly' running from March 15 to April 14, 2024, at Via Arcivescovo Romili 20 in the Corvetto district, near Fondazione Prada and ICA Milano. Founded in 2024 by an anonymous curatorial duo, the project aims to promote emerging contemporary art. The exhibition features works by Yu Chengchen (Hubei, China, 1991) and Rui Wu (Hebei, China, 1991), both artists residing in Italy who studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera—Chengchen in painting and Wu in photography. The title references a Chinese toy similar to a kite, a bamboo dragonfly that vibrates in the sky, which serves as a metaphor for imaginative freedom and cultural reinterpretation. Chengchen's vibrant paintings blend acrylics and oil pastels with silver ribbons and plastics, breaking the canvas boundary with playful faces, hearts, and biomorphic forms evoking sexual instinct and bodily discovery. Wu, co-founder of the independent space t-space in Milan, presents analog and digital photographs including a series on Mao Zedong made from folded yuan notes creating a deformed smiling Mao, and 'Raggi Rossi' and 'Quando viene il rosso' depicting Mediterranean landscapes altered by long exposure and laser illumination from two kilometers away, evoking azalea blooms in southeastern Chinese valleys.
