Velázquez's Portrait of Philip III Unveiled at Prado After Restoration

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The Museo del Prado in Madrid has unveiled Diego Velázquez's newly attributed Portrait of Philip III after a meticulous restoration, nearly a year after its acquisition. The painting, donated by American historian William B. Jordan to the American Friends of the Prado Museum, arrived in Madrid as a temporary deposit through US-Spain collaboration. Initially cataloged as a portrait of Don Rodrigo Calderón, Jordan's research confirmed it as a Velázquez from his time at the Spanish court. The work is displayed in the central gallery alongside Titian's Philip II Offering Victory to Infante Don Fernando and Pedro Vidal's Philip III, plus Velázquez's Philip IV in Armor and The Infante Don Carlos, allowing comparisons. The exhibition runs from June 6 to October 29, 2017.
