Velázquez's Early Masterpiece in Dialogue with Caravaggio at Galleria Borghese
The Galleria Borghese in Rome presents a focused exhibition titled 'Un Velázquez in Galleria,' featuring Diego Velázquez's earliest known work, 'Donna in cucina con Cena di Emmaus' (c. 1618–1620), on loan from the National Gallery of Ireland. The single-painting show places the canvas in the Sala del Sileno alongside works by Caravaggio, Jusepe de Ribera's 'Il Mendicante,' and 'Il Giudizio di Salomone' (recently attributed to Velázquez by Gianni Papi). The exhibition aims to foster a critical dialogue between Velázquez and Caravaggio, highlighting how Velázquez, who had never visited Italy, assimilated Caravaggio's chiaroscuro through Ribera's example. Francesca Cappelletti, director of Galleria Borghese, emphasizes that Ribera was not a Caravaggist but an artist who revived Caravaggio's myth in Rome. The painting exemplifies Velázquez's early bodegón style, blending sacred and profane elements: a kitchen scene with a young woman and still life, with the Supper at Emmaus visible through a window. The exhibition coincides with a renovation project that has transferred fifty works to Palazzo Barberini until June 30, strengthening international museum collaborations.
