Velarca Floating House Reopens on Lake Como After Decade-Long Restoration
On September 14, 2024, the Velarca, a contemporary floating residence designed by BBPR, reopened its doors in Ossuccio, Lake Como. The restoration, which began in 2013 and was funded significantly, took more than ten years to complete. Originally constructed in 1959 for Emilio and Fiammetta Norsa, the house was the work of architects Gian Luigi Banfi, Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso, Enrico Peressutti, and Ernesto Nathan Rogers. After being donated to FAI in 2011, the project involved both reconstruction and enhancements, with interiors inspired by historical photographs. The garden's original design precedes an extensive project set for spring 2025. Admission is complimentary for FAI members and local residents, while tickets range from €4 to €7, including podcasts and a video about the houseboat's history. Luigi Lusardi highlighted the partnership with Regione Lombardia to ensure safety and accessibility.
