Vedovamazzei's Neon Boccioni Signature Lights Up Milan's Archive Citadel
For the Milano Digital Week, the artistic duo Vedovamazzei (Stella Scala and Simeone Crispino) have created a site-specific public art installation at the Cittadella degli Archivi in Milan's Niguarda/Bicocca district. Titled 'La Città che sale. Vedovamazzei presenta Boccioni,' the work consists of a 7-meter-long yellow neon sign reproducing Umberto Boccioni's signature, mounted atop the archive tower. The installation was inspired by a letter from Futurist founder Filippo Tommaso Marinetti to the Municipality of Milan, in which he declared the sale of Boccioni's sculpture 'Linea unica nella continuità dello spazio' for 8,000 lire. The Cittadella, opened in 2016, houses 36 kilometers of paper documents and 150,000 folders, managed by an AI-powered robot named Eustorgio. Curated by Rossella Farinotti, the project is part of a broader requalification effort led by director Francesco Martelli. The neon sign aims to signal the archive's presence and its role in Milan's contemporary cultural landscape, while also highlighting the peripheral area's ongoing revitalization. The installation will be officially inaugurated on Sunday, March 18, the closing day of the Milano Digital Week.
