Vasari's Mythical Drawing Collection on View in Stockholm

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Between October 6, 2022, and January 8, 2023, the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm is hosting an exhibition called 'Giorgio Vasari’s Drawings – A Mythical Collection.' Curated by Carina Fryklund from Nationalmuseum and Louis Frank from the Louvre, this exhibit examines the authenticity of Vasari's famous collection using modern scientific techniques. It showcases over 100 drawings from artists like Domenico Ghirlandaio, Sandro Botticelli, and Raphael, sourced from notable institutions such as the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Vasari, who lived from 1511 to 1574, created this collection to enhance his book 'Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects,' raising questions about which artworks truly belonged to him.
