Vandals damage Terry Jones statue in Colwyn Bay

other · 2026-05-21

Last month, a bronze statue honoring Monty Python's Terry Jones was revealed in Colwyn Bay, Conwy county, but it has since been vandalized. Sculptor Nick Elphick found that two door knockers, inspired by the 1986 film Labyrinth, co-written by Jones, were missing. These knockers were attached to a typewriter on a piano played by a nude organist character. Sally, Jones's daughter, informed Elphick, who noted her distress. The statue was financed through a £120,000 initiative called Python on the Prom, spearheaded by Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam. Elphick expressed his dismay, highlighting the project's limited budget and lack of profit. Locals recovered the stolen pieces, which will need rewelding at a cost of approximately £1,000, and a night vision camera has been installed for security. Jones passed away in 2020 at the age of 77 due to a rare dementia.
