Vancouver Coalition Proposes Four New Concert Halls to Address Venue Shortage

architecture-design · 2026-07-27

A coalition of 32 performing arts organizations, led by the Vancouver Concert Hall and Theatre Society, has unveiled a proposal for four new or substantially renovated performance venues in Downtown Vancouver. The plan, developed through a two-year feasibility study by Diamond Schmitt Architects, aims to address the city's shortage of mid-sized and large venues. The proposed venues range from a 400-seat hall for chamber music to a 2,000-seat proscenium theatre for opera and ballet. Four possible location options include the Robson Square/Vancouver Art Gallery site, Queen Elizabeth Theatre plaza, Larwill Park, and the Northeast False Creek waterfront. The project is supported by municipal, provincial, and federal officials. No construction cost has been provided, with a detailed estimate expected by Spring 2027. Construction could begin between 2029 and 2034. The society notes Vancouver has 0.52 music hall seats per 1,000 residents, compared to 1.03 in Toronto and 1.44 in Melbourne.
