Van Gogh's Sunflowers: A Cinematic Journey Across Five Countries

exhibition · 2026-04-27

A new film, 'Van Gogh – I Girasoli. La più grande storia mai dipinta', directed by David Bickerstaff, explores the five surviving versions of Vincent van Gogh's Sunflowers paintings, which are housed in museums across Tokyo, Munich, London, Amsterdam, and Philadelphia. The film, released as a cinema event on January 17, 18, and 19 by Adler Entertainment, offers unprecedented close-up comparisons of the canvases, revealing differences in color, composition, and the artist's obsessive technique. Bickerstaff, who previously filmed the Van Gogh Museum's Sunflowers, gained unique access to film the work without its frame, uncovering hidden narratives. The documentary stitches together footage from five countries to provide new insights into van Gogh's life and experimentation, as the paintings have never been exhibited together physically.
